1. Notify the Music Education Student Teaching Coordinator
of your intent to student teach by email no
later than the end of the second week of the semester
prior to the semester you plan to student teach. [Students
planning to do their student teaching in the Fall need
to make this contact the Spring Semester prior, while
students desiring a student teaching placement for
the Spring need to initiate the process during the
previous Fall semester.]
2. By no later than the end of the fourth week of
the semester prior to the semester you plan to student
teach, the following items need to be provided to the
Music Education Student Teaching Coordinator:
- • Student
Teacher Placement Survey
• A copy of your current DPR (undergraduates) or Cumulative Grade Report
(MA for licensure students). These can be printed from the MyCase web
site.
• A copy of your current resume
• Your ePortfolio - contact the Director of
Music Education regarding the submission process
3. Following the receipt of these documents, the Music
Education Student Teaching Coordinator will schedule
a meeting with the student to discuss placement.
4. Documentation of a negative TB test, hepatitis
B vaccination, Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI)
background check must be on file with the Director
of Teacher Education by the last day of classes of
the semester prior to student teaching.
- • The Ohio
State Legislature passed a law that requires all persons
working with children in the field of education to
complete a criminal background check (State Law Section
3319.291 -- Certification). This
process is done through the Ohio Bureau of Criminal
Identification and Investigation by means of the
Civilian Identification Fingerprinting Application.
- • Completion
of the criminal background check is the responsibility
of students. All individuals
who will be student teaching or employed as a licensed
teacher or school employee by the State of Ohio
must have a criminal background check completed by
the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation. Students
who have not lived in Ohio for at least five (5)
years must also complete a Federal Bureau of Investigation
Application. Students who are not American
citizens will need to complete both the Ohio BCI
and the FBI application.
- • At least one month prior to
the semester of student teaching, a criminal background
check must be received in the Case Teacher Licensure
office. Students
planning to student teach in the fall should complete
this process in July, while those student teaching
in the spring should complete it in November.
- • Students
must contact National Background Check directly at
877-932-2435 to make an appointment at the Cleveland
location at 4100 Rockside Road, 2nd floor, Independence,
Ohio. National Background
Check will explain the source of ID needed at the
time of the appointment, cost of the process and
if Ohio and/or Federal background checks will be
required. Payment for the background check
is the responsibility of the student.
- • Have a copy of your criminal background
results sent to the Case Teacher Licensure Office. Once
received, the Teacher Licensure Office will send
copies of the results to the student and his/her
Program Director. A
copy will also be retained in the student’s
Teacher Licensure file and be available when the
student applies for licensure upon graduation.
- • Results
of the Criminal Background Check take a minimum of
2 weeks to receive via U.S. mail. If
an FBI check is necessary, it may take 3-weeks. Be
sure to allow adequate time.
5. Once a student teaching placement preference has
been identified, the Music Education Student Teaching
Coordinator will submit a written request for the placement
with the appropriate person in the school district.
The student teaching candidate will be notified of
the results of this request.
6. After your grades for the semester prior to student
teaching are posted, submit another copy of your DPR/Cumulative
Grade Report to the Music Education Student Teaching
Coordinator.
7. Plan to meet with the music education faculty at
Case during the morning of the first Monday of your
student teaching semester to discuss specific student
teaching requirements.
Failure to complete the above
procedures by the dates specified
may result in non-placement for student teaching.
Additional Requirements Necessary
to Obtain an Ohio Teaching License
Beyond successfully completing student teaching, to
receive an Ohio Teaching License students must do the
following.
1. Take the Praxis II Exam <http://www.ets.org/praxis/>.
For licensure in Ohio, you must take the Principles
of Teaching and Learning, either K-6, 5-9, or
7-12. Please note that the poorest pass rates are with
the 5-9 test, so we recommend you take either the K-6
or 7-12 tests. In addition you must take the Music:
Content Knowledge test. You should take the Principles
of Teaching and Learning during your student teaching
semester. The Music: Content Knowledge test
can be taken following completion of all of your music
theory, music history, and music education courses.

2. Once you have successfully completed student teaching,
graduated, and your passing Praxis II scores have been
received, contact the Case Director of Teacher Education
to schedule an appointment to complete your application
for an Ohio Teaching License. |
