Two New Summer Workshops for Advanced Early Music Students

Baroque Dance for Musicians
June 8-14, 2008

Once musicians have the movements of baroque dances in their bones, they never forget them. This is a workshop for advanced musicians wanting to learn the movements of the baroque dances they perform. It is led by Julie Andrijeski, baroque violinist and dancer, and visiting lecturer at CWRU. Joining her will be Jeanne Fischer, soprano and baroque dancer from the music faculty at UNC Chapel Hill. Music staff includes Peter Bennett, harpsichord, Assistant Professor of Music at CWRU. Sessions will include instruction in baroque dance and coachings in baroque dance music.

15th-Century Polyphonic Improvisation
June 29-July 5, 2008

The finest musicians of the 15th century, from the great composers of the period to professional instrumentalists, were all able to improvise polyphonic music over a cantus firmus. This workshop is for musicians wanting to learn how to reconstruct that technique—one of the “final frontiers” in historical performance. The faculty includes Adam K. Gilbert, head of the early music program at USC and director of Ciaramella leading the loud instruments, Crawford Young, from the faculty of the Schola Cantorum in Basel and director of the Ferrara Ensemble leading the soft instruments, and Ross W. Duffin, head of the early music program at CWRU leading the singers.
